UK Coaching is the lead agency for the coaching of physical activity and sport. Whether you are a swimming teacher, fitness instructor or sports coach, UK Coaching will help you be the best you can be through the provision of high quality learning and development and wider support services.
It is a registered charity, with two trading subsidiaries, Coachwise and Physical Activity Limited (PAL). Its role is to help improve the lives of those who take part in sport and physical activity, by working with coaches and coaching organisations to deliver great experiences through coaching excellence.
The group generates income from a number of sources in order to provide this support. In addition, UK Coaching receives funding from both UK Sport and Sport England. It supports many of the National Governing Bodies and County Sports Partnerships in England and works closely with the three Home Country Sports Councils in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
UK Coaching is compliant with the UK Sport code of governance (Tier 3).
The organisation has gone through a transformation over recent years to improve its customer offering and financial sustainability. It has a turnover of circa £9 million and is actively involved in launching fresh initiatives, designed to bring growth to the organisation. UK Coaching is now looking to recruit a Non-Executive Chair following the successful term of the current incumbent, to this exciting, strategically focused position.
Key responsibilities of this role will include:
- Chairing the board meetings of UK Coaching and the subsidiary organsiations
- Strategic responsibility for UK Coaching in conjunction with the Board
- Acting as an ambassador for the organisation, while representing UK Coaching at key events
- Overseeing and involvement in the relationships with the two key funding agencies-Sport England and UK Sport
- Providing advice and guidance to the CEO, who has operational responsibility for the day-to-day running of UK Coaching
Candidates should have a passion for sport and the role that coaching plays across the sporting landscape. They should possess an open style, which encourages debate. You should be comfortable with the ambassadorial aspects of the role and be able to provide mentoring or guidance to the CEO. Strong business expertise is desirable whilst experience of chairing a board or senior executive meetings is essential.
The overall time commitment is likely to be in the region of three days a month on a flexible basis. There are 4-5 board meetings a year. The term is for three years, with a maximum of three terms permitted.
